CMM: Uncovering the molecular basis of disease.

The Center for Molecular Medicine, situated in Utrecht, the Netherlands, performs cutting-edge biomedical research driving discovery and understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying human disease. Researchers perform multidisciplinary fundamental and translational research in relation to a variety of diseases, including cancer and genetic disorders.

Our research topics

  • Cell invasion is the process through which cancer cells become motile and migrate in the tissue surrounding tumors. Cell invasion drives local cancer spread that is considered a basic step towards systemic neoplastic dissemination, metastasis.

    Researched by Khalil.

  • Researched by Janssen, Kaaij

  • Mechanobiology is the field of research that studies how mechanical signals, such as forces exerted by cells on each other and the physical properties of tissues, regulate cellular behavior

    Researched by Gloerich.

  • Mitosis is a process where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells (cell division).

    Researched by Lens.

  • Researched by Vercoulen, Coffer.

  • Senescence is a process by which a cell ages and permanently stops dividing but does not die.

    Researched by de Keizer.

  • Researched by Snippert, Rodriguez-Colman, and Maurice.

  • Researched by Janssen, Lens.

  • Immunology is the study of the immune system and is a very important branch of the medical and biological sciences.

    Researched by Vercoulen.

  • A metabolic disease is a disorder that negatively alters the body's processing and distribution of macronutrients such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

    Researched by Kalkhoven, van Mil

  • Membrane trafficking is the process by which proteins and other macromolecules are distributed throughout the cell, and released to or internalised from the extracellular space.

    Researched by Klumperman.

  • Oxidative stress is a phenomenon caused by an imbalance between the production and accumulation of oxygen reactive species (ROS) in cells and tissues and the ability of a biological system to detoxify these reactive products.
