About the Center for Molecular Medicine

The Center for Molecular Medicine is a research center that focuses on understanding the molecular basis of disease. The Center is part of the Division of Laboratories, Pharmacy and Biomedical Genetics of the UMC Utrecht.

More than 180 researchers perform multidisciplinary fundamental and translational research in relation to various diseases, including cancer and genetic disorders.

Within CMM, we strive to perform cutting-edge biomedical research and discover the molecular mechanisms of human disease to develop molecular interventions.

We study the changes in molecules, i.e. genes, transcripts, proteins, and metabolites that underlie pathological conditions at the cellular, tissue and organismal level

The highly collaborative nature of its investigators and the use of state-of-the-art technologies is key to the success of research at CMM, enabling the study of disease-causing mechanisms at different biological levels; from single molecules to organisms. We have in-house facilities for genomics (U-Seq), proteomics, UCyTOF, metabolomics, light- and electron- microscopy. In addition, we have an in-house bioinformatics support facility (UBEC). The investigators at CMM are committed to strive for clinical translation and academic entrepreneurship to increase the impact of their fundamental science discoveries and innovate diagnosis and treatment of human disease.

  • CMM is at the forefront within the UMCU when it comes to making laboratory processes more sustainable. This is actively driven by our own Green Team, which ensures the centralization and acceleration of sustainable initiatives within this department. Since 2022, CMM has been working with LEAF, a sustainability assessment. LEAF will ensure that all sustainable efforts made by employees and departments in recent years are made visible and scaled up. These efforts are in line with the sustainability objectives of the UMCU.

LEAF, developed by lab specialists from University College London, ensures that laboratories produce demonstrably less waste, save energy and thus reduce CO2 emissions within the foreseeable future. Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework, in short LEAF was presented within dLAB to the division management in 2022 by Green Team lab, a group of employees who want to put sustainability on the agenda on a structural basis. This Green Team is part of UMCU’s 'Green Care Professionals'.

LEAF consists of various questionnaires to map matters such as energy consumption, use of freezers and refrigerators, waste and water management, IT and ventilation. Bottlenecks are also registered centrally when it comes to sustainable procurement. All departments of dLAB are supported by a LEAF coordinator. The goal of LEAF is to map out lab processes, collect employee sustainable initiatives and put them into practice (if possible) and to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. LEAF is also meant to inspire and motivate employees.

LEAF is centrally driven in the Netherlands by Green Lab NL, a network of Dutch sustainability-minded scientists sharing resources and knowledge. UMCU is affiliated with this.
