Margarida Dantas, Lisa Donker (previous Gloerich lab members), Martijn Gloerich and collaborators publish their findings on an unexpected role for CDK1 in epithelial barrier function.

Margarida Dantas, Lisa Donker and colleagues from the research group of Martijn Gloerich at the UMC Utrecht – Center for Molecular Medicine found that CDK1 also keeps epithelial barriers intact, the protective lining around our organs and tissues. It does this throughout the entire cell cycle, not just during cell division. When CDK1 is switched off, the barrier breaks down.

The findings, published in Science Signaling, open up new questions about how cell-cell adhesion is regulated and what happens when it is not. Understanding this mechanism may in the long run offer new leads for conditions in which the epithelial barrier is disrupted.
